5 Common Beginner Surfing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

5 Common Beginner Surfing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

November 15, 2022 by Jon Snow Leave a Comment

Did you know that more than 25% of all surfing injuries are sprains?

Surfing is a fun and exciting activity that people of all ages can enjoy. It’s also a great way to get some exercise while enjoying time in the sun.

But when you’re just beginning, there are many mistakes you could make that will keep you from having the best experience possible. You can also be injured or worse.

Below are some of the most common beginner surfing mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Not Being Prepared

It’s easy to think that all you need is a surfboard, wetsuit, and swimsuit. Unfortunately, that’s not always true.

The ocean is a dangerous place, and it’s best to be prepared for any situation.

You should pack extra clothes in case the weather changes and women’s and mens surfing rash guards. Don’t forget sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and water shoes so that you don’t step on anything sharp while walking in the sand.

2. Not Wearing Sunscreen

When you’re in the water for an extended period, you’ll be in direct sunlight for hours on end. This means that it’s important to protect yourself from sunburn by wearing sunscreen before you go out onto the water.

Even if it’s cloudy outside, don’t forget about sunscreen! The ocean reflects all the sun’s rays onto your skin and makes it easy for you to get burned even more quickly than usual.

3. Not Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do when you’re surfing with friends.

It helps your body stay cool and prevents you from feeling tired or becoming dehydrated. This can lead to heat exhaustion.

Make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water before heading out to the water. This is so you don’t have a problem when it’s time to go swimming.

4. Not Paddling Hard Enough

The most common beginner mistake is not having the stamina training for surfing and paddling hard enough.

If you don’t paddle hard enough, then your board will be easy for the wave to push around and off balance. When this happens, you’ll fall off more often than not.

You must paddle hard enough that your board doesn’t move side to side easily when you don’t have control of it.

5. Not Using the Right Gear

The right gear is also important. If you’re not using the right type of board, then it won’t be easy to balance and control.

There are many boards, all with unique characteristics. The best way to find out which one suits your needs is by talking to an expert at a surf shop or checking online reviews.
